Barzal named to Team Pacific for U-17 championship

November 14, 2013, KENT (ISN) – Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced center Mathew Barzal has been named by Hockey BC and Hockey Alberta to the 22-player roster that will represent Team Pacific at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, December 29, 2013, to January 4, 2014, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Barzal has played in all 21 T-Birds games this season and has three goals and 19 assists for 22 points. He had an eight-game point streak earlier this season, the longest point streak for a T-Bird this season.

Team Pacific is comprised of 13 players from BC and nine players from Alberta. All 22 players on the roster currently play in the Western Hockey League.

The 2014 World U17 Hockey Challenge brings together the top players in the world born in 1997 or later.  The tournament is made up of 10 teams; five from Canada – Quebec, Ontario, Pacific (Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Yukon), Atlantic (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) and West (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut) and five international teams – Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany and the United States.

Team Pacific will be competing in Group A at the World U17 Hockey Challenge with Team West, Team Quebec, Sweden and Czech Republic.  Group B will comprise of Germany, USA, Team Ontario, Team Atlantic and Russia.

The roster for Team West, comprised of players from Saskatchewan and Manitoba, will be released in the near future. It is possible current T-Birds could be named to this team.

The T-Birds travel to Victoria for back-to-back games against the Royals this weekend. Friday’s game is at 7:35pm and Saturday’s game is at 7:05pm. The next home game is Tuesday, November 19, against the Kelowna Rockets at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2013-14 season are available online at the  T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
