Fed Cup coming to Montreal on February 8 and 9

Tennis Canada

November 14, 2013, Montreal (ISN) – Tennis Canada announced Thursday that the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex will host the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II first round tie between Canada and Serbia on February 8 and 9, 2014.

“We are very excited to have the chance to play at home, on our choice of surface, and especially in front of our fans,” said Syvain Bruneau, Captain of the Canadian Fed Cup team. “Over the past few years we have had to play on the road in conditions that were not favourable to us, so we want to make the most of our home court advantage for this tie.”

Fed Cup returns to Montreal for the first time since 2010 when Canada swept Argentina indoors at Uniprix Stadium to earn a place in World Group II. Tennis Canada chose the Claude-Robillard complex in order to host 4,000 spectators and create an electric atmosphere. The matches will be played on a hard court which will be installed exclusively for the competition.

Canada was promoted to World Group II for the first time since 2011 after defeating Ukraine 3-2 on the road in Kiev last April. Bruneau’s team was composed of Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa, ON), Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), and Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON). With a win over Serbia, Canada would mkove on to play World Group I play-off tie in April.

The players nominated for each team will be announced in January. Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) could find herself back on the Canadian squad after being forced to miss all of her country’s ties in 2013 because of a shoulder injury. The top Serbian players as of today are Jelena Jankovic (no. 8), Ana Ivanovic (no. 16), Bojana Jovanovski (no. 36), and Vesna Dolonc (no. 103).

Canada will have the chance to avenge its 3-2 loss to Serbia in 2011. The tie was played indoors on a hard court in Novi Sad, Serbia. The two teams have only met one other time, in 1980, and it was Serbia, then known as Yugoslavia, that came away with a 2-1 victory.

Tickets for the tie can be purchased by calling 1-855-TENNIS-0 (1-855-836-6470) starting Monday. Prices start at $25 and $15 for students.
