November 14, 2013, SACKVILLE, N.S. (ISN) – Atlantic University Sport together with Mount Allison University are proud to announce that former AUS most outstanding player Gary Ross will serve as the honorary chair of the 2013 CIS Uteck Bowl being hosted this Saturday at MacAulay Field in Sackville, N.B.
A wide receiver and return specialist during his career at Mount Allison, Ross was named the 2009 Atlantic University Sport most outstanding player and is a three-time CIS first team all-Canadian. He was also named a second team CIS all-Canadian in 2008 and was honoured as an AUS conference all-star in each of his five seasons with the Mounties program.
Gary, who was also an academic all-Canadian, wrapped up his university career as the all-time AUS leader in receptions (206), receiving yards (3,106), punt return yards (1,981), kickoff return yards (1,537) and all-purpose yards (7,053).
In 2009, Ross had a record-setting season for the Mounties, leading the Atlantic conference in receptions (60), receiving yards (818 yards), receiving touchdowns (4) and all-purpose yards (1,423 yards). His 60 receptions established a new AUS single-season record and his 818 yards set a Mount Allison single-season school record.
“Gary could change the game in so many ways, as a returner, receiver or runner. He was very explosive and had the ability to score on every play,” says Mounties head coach Kelly Jeffrey.
“Gary Ross and his teammates, during the years he played, are directly responsible for the foundation that has helped build our current team,” commented Pierre Arsenault, director of athletics at Mount Allison. “He is truly the ultimate Mountie. A tremendous student-athlete who showed what is possible. We are forever grateful and proud of what Gary has done for our program.”
As honorary chair, Gary will be on campus throughout the weekend and will participate in the ceremonial kickoff during the opening ceremonies.
Ross, who was also in attendance for last week’s Subway AUS Loney Bowl victory over Saint Mary’s, graduated from Mount Allison with a bachelor of science in biology in 2010 and is currently studying dentistry at the University of Detroit Mercy. He lives in Windsor, Ont., with his wife Tenecia and their three children.
Saturday’s game versus the RSEQ champion Laval Rouge et Or will kick off at 1:30 p.m. AST at MacAulay Field in Sackville, N.B.
