November 14, 2013, Langford, BC (ISN) – The Mt. Doug Rams used a 15-sack performance by their defence to propel themselves to a 28-0 win over the Notre Dame Jugglers in BC High School Football Junior Varsity playoff action Thursday afternoon at Westhills Stadium in Langford.
Doing most of the damage for the Rams defence was end Jonny Grohovac, who registered ten sacks and seemed to be in Juggler quarterback Anthony Crescenzo’s face on every play. Trystin Waters also was responsible for four stops of Crescenzo.

The Rams defence was so dominant, that the best field position the Jugglers ever had during the bulk of the game was when they took possession of the ball on the Rams 24-yard line following a horrible 4th down punt snap over the head of the Rams punter.

That position was short-lived however, as three sacks and a negative 17 yards later, the Rams took the ball back over on downs on their own 41-yard line.
Offensively, the Rams did what they needed to do and while they found the running tough at times on the ground, quarterback Gavin Cobb used a deadly passing game to great effectiveness against the Juggler defence.

The Rams did open the scoring in the first quarter on a running play, as they took their second possession of the game and capped off a 66-yard drive with a Cobb pitch to Manny Lopez who would then power it in from about 10-yards out. With the convert by Michael Olson (who would be a perfect 4 for 4 on the day) the Rams led 7-0.

The Rams looked to add to their lead in the second quarter, but would fumble on the 5-yard line, giving the ball back to the Jugglers.

After their ensuing drive stalled, the Jugglers would punt, but made the mistake of kicking the ball into the hands of Lopez, who would take the ball at mid-field and return it to the Jugglers 1-yard line. After a couple of failed attempts on the ground, Justice Kremler would eventually run the ball in from 2-yards out to put the Rams up 14-0, a score that would carry through until half-time.

The Jugglers took to the field in the second half confident that they could score a pair of touchdowns on the Rams and overcome their 14-0 deficit. However the Rams quickly quashed that feeling, as they took the second half kick-off and on the second play from scrimmage, Cobb hooked up with Brandon Santos for a 45-yard pass and run play for a touchdown. 21-0 Rams.

That score held until the start of the fourth quarter when Cobb would once again display deadly accuracy on the aerial attack, hitting a wide-open Oliver MacKenzie for a 40-yard score and putting the Rams up 28-0.

The Jugglers would mount one last challenge after that, marching the ball down to the Rams goal line with just seconds to play, but the Rams defence held, knocking down a possible touchdown pass on the final play of the game and preserving the 28-0 shutout win.

The Rams will now head to the Lower Mainland to play in the Junior Varsity semi-finals. Their opponent is still to be determined.
