November 17, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Edmonton Oil Kings unveiled the jerseys they will be wearing when thousands of stuffed animals come flying over the glass at Rexall Place this season at the launch of the team’s campaign for the 2013 Dodge Teddy Bear Toss presented by the Edmonton SUN, Global Edmonton, SHAW TV and 630 CHED Sunday at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace.

“Anytime you give back to the community in such a thing like the Teddy Bear Toss, it’s always one of my favourite games of the season,” said Oil Kings assistant captain Curtis Lazar.

“Everyone brings their teddy bears and seeing them all come down on the ice is pretty cool. Every fan should bring at least one teddy bear. It’s a simple thing that goes a long ways.”

This year, the Teddy Bear Toss will take place December 6 against the Portland Winterhawks in a rematch of the past two WHL finals. The Oil Kings hope to smash team records, set last year, of 12,575 fans in attendance and 10,835 bears hitting the ice.

“It really is one of our favourite promotions of the year,” said Oil Kings Director of Business Operations Jordi Weidman. “Everyone’s encouraged to get as many new stuffed animals as they can.

“Bring three or four, if you can.”

“I think the most important thing about it is what happens to the teddy bears after they get thrown on the ice,” added Oil Kings forward Henrik Samuelsson.

The bears will be donated to 630 CHED Santas Anonymous along with funds raised from auctioning off the game-worn specially designed Teddy Bear jerseys.

“It’s hugely important for us because teddy bears are such a great gift for us,” said Daryl Hooke, Past-Chairman of Santas Anonymous. “We’re delighted to be partnered up with the Oil Kings.”

“They go to kids that aren’t able to get that Christmas experience that other families are fortunate of having,” Lazar added. “The holidays are a great time to all come together, and I mean, what’s better than a teddy bear?”

Over the past six years, 27,599 bears have been hurled onto the ice at Rexall Place. The night has become one of the most anticipated on the Oil Kings calendar. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, with a ticket and a bear combo available starting at just $20.
