November 19, 2013, Kamloops, BC (ISN) – In a Tuesday night match-up at Interior Savings Centre, the Victoria Royals went up against the Kamloops Blazers. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in goal, while the Blazers countered with Taran Kozun.
Tyler Soy opened the scoring for the Royals on the powerplay at the 6:33 mark of the first period. Logan Nelson found Soy in the slot where the Royals’ forward snapped a shot over the shoulder of Kozun to give Victoria a 1-0 lead. Victoria added another powerplay goal at the 16:04 mark when Steven Hodges notched his first tally of the season. Hodges received the puck from Brett Cote to the left of Kozun before he made a spin move and placed a backhanded shot by the goaltender to make it a two-goal game after 20 minutes of play.
Kamloops began the period in the Royals’ zone with multiple chances, but Polivka stood tall and the Blazers were unable to convert. Keegan Kanzig and Ryan Rehill dropped the gloves late in the frame as the physical play began to pick up. At the 18:56 mark, Kamloops took advantage of a late Victoria penalty when Chase Souto fired a wrist shot past Polivka. After two periods, the Royals held a 2-1 lead.
The Royals headed to the penalty kill early in the period, but Victoria’s Brandon Fushimi had the best chance when his shorthanded breakaway attempt was denied by Kozun. The two teams exchanged opportunities throughout the third period, but both Polivka and Kozun continued their strong play. With 1:27 remaining, Kamloops called a timeout and pulled Kozun for the extra attacker, but Polivka shut the door to preserve the win. Royals 2 Blazers 1.
Victoria went 2/2= 100.0% on the powerplay, while Kamloops went 1/3= 33.3%. The Blazers outshot the Royals 43-35.
Victoria will now travel to Kelowna to face the Rockets tomorrow night before returning back to Victoria to take on the Kamloops Blazers for a two-game home stand. The first game is set for 7:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Friday, November 22.
