November 22, 2013, VANCOUVER, BC (ISN) – The Vancouver Giants defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-3 Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver.
The T-Birds take on the Portland Winterhawks Saturday at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm. The game is the annual Fred Meyer Turkey Shoot where all female fans in attendance can win a free turkey after the game.
Seattle (12-9-1-3) took a 1-0 lead 2:34 into the first period on Jared Hauf’s third goal of the season. Seth Swenson won a faceoff in the left circle in the Vancouver zone to Ryan Gropp along the left boards. Gropp sent the puck to Hauf at the left point. Hauf took a wrist shot with traffic in front of Vancouver goalie Jared Rathjen and the shot beat the goalie on the glove side.
Vancouver (11-11-4-1) came right back and tied the game 1-1 at 5:32 of the first. Dalton Sward took a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that was tipped by Rob Trzonkowski past Seattle goalie Danny Mumaugh. Thomas Foster had the second assist.
Both teams had 10 shots on goal in the first period.
Trace Elson gave the Giants a 2-1 lead at 5:13 of the second period. Carter Popoff fed the puck to Elson in the slot from behind the net. Elson beat Mumaugh low for the goal.
Brett Kulak scored on a point shot with traffic in front of Mumaugh to extend the Giants lead to 3-1 at 6:47 of the second. Popoff and Jackson Houck had the assists.
The T-Birds cut the Giants lead to one goal at 8:32 of the second. Shea Theodore put a wrist shot on goal from the right point that Rathjen blockered away. The puck went right to Jaimen Yakubowski in the left circle.
Yakubowski quickly shot the puck and beat Rathjen high.
The Giants took the two-goal lead back at 12:03 of the second when Luca Leone scored from a sharp angle. Tyler Morrison and Trent Lofthouse had the assists.
Vancouver made it a 5-2 lead with 11 seconds left in the second period. Joel Hamilton took a slap shot that rebounded off Mumaugh high in the air. The puck landed behind Mumaugh and rolled into the net. Cain Franson had an assist on the goal.
The Giants led 31-19 in shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 21-9 in the second period.
Justin Myles replaced Mumaugh in net to start the third period. Mumaugh made 26 saves on 31 shots and his record falls to 6-5-1-3.
Houck scored at 7:18 of the third period to put the Giants in front 6-2. Popoff and Elson had the assists.
The T-Birds capitalized on a five-on-three power play at 11:21 of the third to get their third goal. Adam Henry moved the puck to Theodore at the left point. Theodore skated towards the Vancouver goal and then made a cross slot pass to Roberts Lipsbergs. Lipsbergs waited out Rathjen and then slipped the puck around the goalie for his 14th goal of the season.
Vancouver outshot Seattle 36-27 in the game.
Myles stopped four of five shots he faced in the third period.
Rathjen made 24 saves on 27 shots and his record is now 3-2-1-1.
