November 22, 2013 Saskatoon (ISN) – Rookie University of Saskatchewan goaltender Karen Lefsrud made 22 saves to lead the No. 8 ranked Huskies to a 4-0 shutout over the visiting No. 9 ranked University of Regina Cougars Friday night in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
Lefsrud made eight saves in the first, eight in the second and another six in the third to record her second shutout of her CIS career.
With the win Saskatchewan improves to 8-3-2, while the Cougars drop to 8-5. The series has big bearing on the Canada West standings, the teams entered the weekend tied for second spot.
The Huskies opened the scoring at 14:23 when Sara Greschner tallied with a quick wrist shot on the power play.
Saskatchewan took a 2-0 lead on a cross-crease pass from captain Cami Wooster to Kaitlin Willoughby just 2:42 into the second period on the power play. Wooster tallied again for the Huskies at 10:01 in the second with a quick cross play with Cassandra Jorgenson for the 3-0 lead.
Alexee Klassen scored her first CIS goal at 4:56 in the final frame.
Jennifer Schmidt made 32 saves in the loss for the Cougars.
Saskatchewan went 2-for-8 with the man-advantage, while Regina failed to capitalize on their two power play opportunities.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m. and a video feed can be watched on canadawest.tv.
