November 25, 2013, Victoria (ISN) – Holiday celebrations will be a short break for the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team who will regroup very quickly to compete in the Thunder Selects hosted CIS Holiday Classic set for Dec. 28-30 at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, N.S.
The eight-team exhibition tournament will feature only two schools from the Canada West, Victoria and Manitoba, and will be a single knock-out style to get to the championship final on Dec. 30.
The Thunder Selects are a private not-for-profit program that originated in Halifax in 1999. THe program supports the growth of girls under the age of 22 an opportunity to improve their basketball skills in a competitive, fun and memorable way. The program is led by director and head coach Brandon Rafuse. The CIS Holiday Classic will be an important show case for the program.
Also competing in the tournament will be the McMaster, Brock and Western from the Ontario University Athletics Association, as well as the Atlatnic’s Acadia, Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s. The Vikes will open the tournament against McMaster in the third game of the day, with the winners advancing through the semifinals on Dec. 29 and finals on Dec. 30. All games will be played at the Homburg Centre at Saint Mary’s University with live streaming available cia the SMU Athletics Website.
