VANCOUVER – Ryan Cochrane’s outstanding performance at FINA World Championships received more recognition Wednesday as he was named OMEGA Male Swimmer of the Year.
The announcement was made on Breakfast Television Vancouver as Swimming Canada’s Big Splash Awards Week continued. Awards are being announced each day, with Benoit Huot and Valerie Grand’Maison being named the Team Aquatic Supplies Male and Female Para-Swimmers of the Year earlier in the week.
The annual award recognizes the best performance by a Canadian male swimmer at the premier international meet of the year. This year’s premier international meet was the FINA World Championships in Barcelona.
Cochrane’s silver medal in the 1,500-metre freestyle gave him six for his world championships career, the most all-time for a Canadian. Earlier in the championships he took bronze in the 800-m freestyle. He is only the second man in history to double-medal in those two events at three straight worlds, with Australian legend Grant Hackett making up the other half of that very short list.
The week-long celebration of the best in Canadian swimming continues as the Victoria Times-Colonist will reveal the next Big Splash Awards Week winner Thursday.
The OMEGA Female Swimmer of the Year, Open Water Swimmer of the Year and the People’s Choice Race of the Year remain to be announced.
