Coastal playdowns, open women’s qualification event will decide curling contenders

November 29, 2013, Coquitlam, BC (ISN) – Twelve berths for the 2014 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships are up for grabs in Coquitlam this weekend.

Six Junior Men’s and six Junior Women’s spots will be decided at the coastal playdowns being staged at the Coquitlam Curling Centre on Poirier Street this weekend (Nov. 29-Dec 1).

Also happening this weekend is an open playdown event for Women’s teams hoping to qualify for the 2014 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western. Two berths are up for grabs at the event at the Kelowna Curling Club.

The results of Curl BC playdowns can be viewed as they come in on http://www.playdowns.com/ under the British Columbia (Curl BC) tab. The site also contains information about the teams and what clubs they represent. 

Four junior teams have already qualified for the junior championships – including last year’s Canadian champions.

The Brown rink from Kamloops Curling Club, with Skip Corryn Brown, Third Erin Pincott, Second Samantha Fisher and Lead Sydney Fraser will be back to defend their BC title. They will be joined at the Junior Women’s event by Team Edwards, from Vernon Curling Club.

On the Junior Men’s side, Team Umpherville from Beaver Valley Curling Club and Team Cliff, from the Vernon Curling Club, have already qualified.

A total of six teams have already qualified for the BC Scotties, including defending champion and two-time national Scotties winner Kelly Scott. The other women to have qualified are Team MacInnes from Abbotsford, Team Knezevic from Prince George, as well as three teams from the Victoria Curling Centre – Team Wark, Team Van Osch and Team Jensen.

The 2014 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships take place at Chilliwack Curling Club from Dec. 26-Dec. 31, 2013.

The Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s finals on December 31, 2013, will be broadcast on Sportsnet.

The 2014 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, takes place at Prince George Golf and Curling Club from Jan. 6-Jan. 12, 2014.

The BC Scotties semi-finals and finals on January 11 and 12 will be broadcast on Sportsnet.
