Female Athlete of the Month – Renae Barks, Women’s rowing
Fifth-year Vikes women’s rower Renae Barks put up consistent finishes through the Vikes’ two regattas in November, earning her Original Joe’s Female Athlete of the Month. Barks is one of three returning members from last year’s national championship-winning squad. The Vikes’ first regatta of the month, also one of the largest events of the season, was the Canadian University Rowing Championships held in Montreal, Que. Barks rowed to a second-place finish in the lightweight fours and earned bronze in both the pairs and singles events. In her final fall competition at the National Rowing Championships, Barks put together her top performance of the fall season, rowing to a first-place finish in the under-23 category after posting a time of 8.29.86.
Male Athlete of the Month – Lee Hall, Men’s rowing
Vikes men’s rower Lee Hall’s lightweight-double performance at the 2013 Canadian University Rowing Championships has earned him the Original Joe’s Athlete of the Month honours for November. Hall, along with fellow Vike and Canadian national team member Alex Walker, rowed to a first-place men’s lightweight double finish at the championships. The pair’s first win of the fall season came at the annual Victoria-hosted Head of the Gorge event. Hall, a fourth-year social sciences major and Victoria native, has been a fixture on the Vikes men’s rowing team, alongside Walker the duo have established themselves as one of the top pairs in the country after also capturing gold at last year’s 2012 CURC’s.
Team of the Month – Women’s field hockey
The University of Victoria women’s field hockey were named the Original Joe’s Team of the Month for November after they capped off an impressive 2013 field hockey campaign in front of an equally impressive home crowd at the Field Hockey Canada CIS national championship. Despite having a host berth in the championships guaranteed, the Vikes had one of their most successful seasons in recent memory, capping off the 2013 season with their first Canada West banner since 2002. Led by fifth-year captain Kyla Kirby, the Vikes rolled to a 5-0-3 conference record, capturing the Canada West title in the final game of the regular season with a 2-0 victory over UBC on home field. In the championships, the Vikes battled their way to the gold-medal match, earning CIS silver after a hard-fought battle against a UBC squad loaded with national team talent.
