November 30, 2013, VANCOUVER (ISN) – Second-year Trinity Western runner Joel De Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.) finished fourth overall in the junior men’s race at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships as he led a Spartans contingent that had four athletes finish in the top 20 of their respective races Saturday at Jericho Beach.

De Schiffart, who was the top junior finisher amongst B.C. athletes, completed the eight kilometre race in 25:58.10.

“Joel’s performance was a pleasant surprise, but not completely unexpected,” said Spartans endurance coach Mark Bomba. “He was pretty focused and right from the get-go looked very good.”

Competing in the women’s junior race, first-year Spartan Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) finished ninth overall with a time of 18:36.48 in the five kilometre competition. Like De Schiffart, Yee was also the top finisher amongst B.C. athletes in her junior race. With her performance, Yee earned a spot as an alternate on Canada’s junior team that will compete in the 2014 NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association) Cross Country Championships.

“Regan got in there and ran tough,” Bomba said. “Like Joel, she put together a strong effort and proved that she’s quickly becoming a strong cross country runner.”

In the senior women’s race, reigning Canada West champion fourth-year Alison Jackson (Vermilion, Alta.) finished 14th over seven kilometres with a time of 26:11.25. Jackson was fourth amongst B.C. senior women.

As for the senior men’s competition, first-year Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.) finished 17th overall with a time of 33:21.39 over 10 kilometres. He was fourth amongst B.C. athletes. First-year Spartan Adam Marshall (Langley, B.C.) also ran in the junior men’s race, finishing 75th overall in 28:19.19.

“This race wasn’t really a priority for us as we had focused our training on preparing for CIS nationals earlier this month,” Bomba said. “But these results are a byproduct of the work everyone is putting in. Today’s efforts just go to show that everyone is on track. All our athletes ran well and this is more of icing on the cake for what was a great season.”

The Spartans entered Saturday’s national championships off a best-ever team effort at this year’s CIS and Canada West championships. As a team, the Spartans women’s team won the Canada West title for the first time in program history and was fourth in the CIS while the TWU men’s team was second in the conference and seventh overall.
