December 2, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – A small contingent of University of Victoria Vikes cross-country members headed to Vancouver, B.C. to compete in the National Cross-country Championships, Nov. 30 at Jericho Beach Park. The championships are the final cross-country event that UVic runners will compete in this year.
Despite less-than-ideal racing conditions, Vikes Ryan Cassidy and Thomas Getty’s qualified to represent Canada at the upcoming 2014 North America Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association Championships (NACAC), being held in Trinidad and Tobago, Feb. 22, 2014.
“We had a great day of races in some tough, muddy conditions,” said Vikes assistant coach Andrew Ellerton. “Highlights definitely have to be Ryan and Thomas qualifying for NACAC championships this winter. Any time you earn the opportunity to put on a Canadian jersey it’s a special day and hats off to those guys for accomplishing that.”
Also competing in the championships this past weekend were Vikes Patrick Psotka in the senior men’s category, Madeline MacDonald in the senior women’s as well as Matthew Noseworthy and Russell Pennock in the junior men’s category.
With the cross-country season now over, the Vikes will prepare to transition to the track circuit, getting their first taste of competition at the UW Indoor Preview, Jan. 18, 2014 at the University of Washington.
