December 2, 2013, Portland (ISN) – Portland Winterhawks players Taylor Leier, Nic Petan and Derrick Pouliot are among the 25 players invited to Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp.
The camp will run December 12-15 in Toronto, Ontario. Canada’s final roster for the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmö, Sweden, will include 22 players, and must be finalized by Dec. 25. The tournament takes place from December 26 – January 5.
Leier, Petan & Pouliot all played for Team WHL at last week’s Subway Super Series. The Winterhawks are the only CHL team with three players invited to Canada’s camp.
“All three players had exceptional showings at last week’s Subway Super Series, and I’m excited for all of them to have this opportunity,” said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “It’s a challenge for us to lose key players during the season, but it’ll be an opportunity for other players to play meaningful minutes and step up in their absence.”
Leier, the Winterhawks’ captain, has 38 points in 28 games this season. He was a fourth round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 NHL Draft.
Petan has 60 points in 28 games this season, ranking first on the team and second in the league. He registered 120 points last season, tying him with teammate Brendan Leipsic for the lead across the CHL. He was a second round pick by the Winnipeg Jets in this year’s NHL Draft.
Pouliot leads all Winterhawks defensemen with 25 points in 24 games this season. He was the eighth overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
