December 4, 2013, LANGLEY, British Columbia (ISN) – Trinity Western first-year student-athlete Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) and second-year Joel de Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.) were both named 2013 BC Athletics Junior Cross Country Runners of the Year while de Schiffart was also named BC Athletics Junior Road Runner of the Year.
Coming off a ninth place finish overall and first amongst B.C. athletes in the women’s junior race at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships, Yee became the second female Spartan to win the Junior Cross Country Runner of the Year award in the last three years. Now fourth-year Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.), who last year was named the BC Athletics Senior Female Cross Country Runner of the Year, also captured the junior award in 2011.
De Schiffart, who will share his Junior Cross Country Runner of the Year award with the University of Victoria’s Thomas Getty, is also the second TWU athlete to earn this particular award in the last three year as now third-year Blair Johnston (White Rock, B.C.) earned the honour in 2011. De Schiffart finished fourth overall in the men’s junior race at the national championships and was the top B.C. finisher, bettering Getty, who finished second, by more than 26 seconds.
For de Schiffart, this is also the second year in a row, he has earned the BC Athletics Junior Road Runner of the Year award.
Yee and de Schiffart will be recognized for their awards this Saturday, Dec. 7, at the 2013 BC Athletics Annual Awards Banquet at the Hilton Vancouver Airport Hotel.
At this year’s CIS national championships, Yee finished 24th overall and seventh in Canada West, helping the Spartans women to their first ever Canada West team championship. De Schiffart, who was the Spartans top finisher at the CIS championships, finished 19th overall and third in Canada West. Both Yee and de Schiffart were named Canada West First Team All-Stars.
