Royals host teddy bear toss, Giants this weekend

December 5, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Royals will host their B.C. Division rivals the Vancouver Giants for a two-game set at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre this weekend.

The games begin tomorrow night and conclude with Saturday’s annual Teddy Bear Toss Night presented by Capital Iron, Save-On-Foods, 100.3 The Q!, The Zone @ 91.3 and the Times Colonist. Puck drop each night is set for 7:05 p.m.

Fans are reminded that Marty the Marmot bears are now on sale at both Capital Iron locations and Save-On-Foods for $10.00 or two for $15.00. All proceeds from the sale of Marty the Marmot bears will go towards the BC Children’s Hospital. Those who purchase a bear from these locations will also receive one $5.00 discount voucher valid for a ticket to Saturday’s Teddy Bear Toss Night for each bear bought. Fans can also bring in their own new or gently-used stuffed animals to throw on the ice following the Royals’ first goal. There will also be a limited amount of miniature Marty the Marmot stuffed toys available to purchase in the concourse with all proceeds going to the BC Children’s Hospital.

The Vancouver Giants roll into town with a 13-11-5-2 record and having earned at least one point in each of their last 10 games. Currently holding the eighth spot in the WHL’s Western Conference, the Giants have leaned on forwards Carter Popoff (7g-24a), Cain Franson (11g-16a) and Jackson Houck (14g-10a) for scoring up front while Brett Kulak, a Calgary Flames draft pick, has provided scoring from the blue line with 30 points (11g-19a) in 31 games.

The Royals have a 9-2-0-0 record in their last 11 games played and currently sit one point up on Spokane for the fourth spot in the Western Conference. Victoria began their December schedule with a 3-0 win over Kootenay on Tuesday night in which Coleman Vollrath stopped 25 shots to record his first WHL shutout. Vollrath currently boasts the best numbers in the league with a 1.88 GAA and a .942 save percentage through 12 games played. Logan Nelson continues to lead the club in scoring with 31 points (12g-19a) in 31 games.

Friday, December 6

FortisBC will be in the concourse on Friday night handing out plinko chips to 300 lucky fans upon entrance that can be used at the FortisBC booth for a chance to win a prize! Fans are also encouraged to follow @FortisBC on Twitter and use the hashtag #fortisbchockey during the game and then visit the FortisBC booth at Gate 1 to win a prize!

Arrive between 6:00-6:45 p.m. to get your Christmas photos with Marty the Marmot at Gate 1 courtesy of Japan Camera! Photos will be printed on site by Japan Camera for a food or cash donation to the Mustard Seed.

During the first intermission on Friday night, young hockey players from Saanich Minor Hockey will participate in Tim Bits Minor Hockey presented by 100.3 The Q! During the second intermission, two fans will win a Royals Holiday Combo!

During the game, fans will be able to purchase tickets for the End of the Roll 50/50 draw and foam pucks for the Old House Village Chuck-A-Puck. The prize for the evening’s Chuck-A-Puck will be a one-night stay and spa treatment for two courtesy of Old House Village as well as a Royals Holiday Combo! Proceeds from the evening’s End of the Roll 50/50 will go towards Victoria Eagles Baseball while the Old House Village Chuck-A-Puck will support Free the Children.

Saturday, December 7 – Teddy Bear Toss Night

Saturday is one of our favourite nights of the year; it’s Teddy Bear Toss Night presented by presented by Capital Iron, Save-On-Foods, 100.3 The Q!, The Zone @ 91.3 and the Times Colonist!

Fans are encouraged to bring their new or gently-used teddy bears or other stuffed toys to the game and throw them on the ice after the Royals’ first goal. There will also be a limited amount of miniature Marty the Marmot stuffed toys available to purchase in the concourse with all proceeds going to the BC Children’s Hospital. Save-On-Foods will be handing out bags for stuffed toys to be placed in for throwing. All stuffed toys collected will be distributed to local charities including the Salvation Army and Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and used for hospital visits by Royals’ players throughout the year.

Teddy Bear Toss Night is a Canadian junior hockey tradition in which fans are encouraged to bring their new or gently-used teddy bears and stuffed toys to the game and throw them on the ice following the home team’s first goal. The teddy bears and stuffed toys are donated to local charities and used by the Royals during hospital visits throughout the season.

During the first intermission on Friday night, young hockey players from Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey will participate in Tim Bits Minor Hockey presented by 100.3 The Q! The second intermission will feature an on-ice promotion by Capital Iron in which one lucky fan will a $100 gift certificate for Christmas lights from Evolution Lighting!

During the game, fans will be able to purchase tickets for the End of the Roll 50/50 draw and foam pucks for the Old House Village Chuck-A-Puck. The prize for the evening’s Chuck-A-Puck will be a one-night stay and spa treatment for two courtesy of Old House Village as well as a Royals Holiday Combo! Proceeds from the evening’s End of the Roll 50/50 and the Old House Village Chuck-A-Puck will also support the T.L.C Fund for Kids.
