December 4, 2013, LANGLEY, British Columbia (ISN) – The defending Canada West champion Trinity Western women’s cross country team will add a veteran athlete with a winning pedigree to its team this spring as Spartans coach Laurier Primeau announced the signing of two-time 3A Washington State High School champion Michelle Schubert (Yakima, Wash.) Wednesday.

The 5-foot-6 distance runner, who graduated from Yakima’s West Valley High School in 2006, captured the individual 3A state championship as a Grade 11 student in 2004 and as a Grade 12 student in 2005.

Since then she has, amongst other schools, spent time at both the University of Portland and the University of Washington.

Schubert, who has used just one year of university eligibility, has personal bests of 4:42 in the 1500m, 10:25 in the 3000m and 18:00 in the 5000m.

“Michelle had a storied high school cross country career and we are anxious to see her regain that form,” Primeau said. “As the former state country champion, we know that she understands the ingredients required to succeed at a high level. She comes to TWU with a passion for linguistics and will look to concentrate on Bible translation.”

Schubert will arrive at TWU for the spring semester but likely won’t compete with the Spartans until September.

She plans to study linguistics and philosophy.
