December 6, 2013, EDMONTON (ISN) – Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League proudly announce that former Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Jacob DeSerres from the University of Calgary Dinos is WHL men’s hockey Graduate of the Month for November.

This marks the second consecutive month that a Dinos student-athlete has won the award by receiving the maximum number of first-place votes.

A third-round Draft pick (84th overall) by the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers in 2008, DeSerres becomes the 27th monthly winner for the Dinos, with rookie forward Chris Collins claiming the honour in October.

DeSerres was one of 168 Canada West men’s hockey players to receive a WHL Scholarship for the 2013-14 season and a total of 305 scholarships were awarded by the Western Hockey League this season.

The award is voted on by all eight Canada West men’s hockey coaches. Each monthly winner during the season receives a $500 cheque towards the cost of education, a plaque, a letter from WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and a computer bag. Canada West will also honour recipient at a home game, with an invitation to appear on the WHL Radio Show.

DeSerres, a third-year Arts student playing his hometown of Calgary, is prime back-stopper for the CIS #1-ranked Calgary Dinos, which have compiled a 15-0-1 record through eight weeks of the schedule. Overall in 2013-14, the 6-foot-2 netminder is 9-0-1, with a 1.50 goal against average and three shutouts, making him the Canada West leader in each category.

In his amazing month of November, DeSerres went 5-0-1, with a stunning 0.67 GAA and three shutouts, including a blank of then-CIS #1 Alberta in the first of a home-and-home series of 12-0-0 teams. Technically, he was mostly responsible for a fourth shutout, playing 52 minutes in relief of teammate Kris Lazaruk in a 3-0 win at Mount Royal.

During the month he was named the game’s First Star three times, Second Star once and Third Star on another occasion.

“Jacob had an exceptional month of November and was instrumental in the Dinos having a 7-0-1 record,” said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. “He stepped up when Lazaruk got hurt and carried the load in some big games and shone on every occasion. His game was in control throughout each game and created confidence for his team.”

The 23-year-old played four full seasons in the Western Hockey League after he was chosen 56th overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds during the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft. DeSerres started only a few games in 2005-06 before taking a more prominent role for three seasons in Seattle, ultimately finishing with a 66-44-5 record, nine shutouts and 2.79 GAA over five seasons. After just three games of the 2009-10 campaign he was sent to Brandon, where he went 25-7 with the Wheat Kings during the regular season. In the playoffs, he was 8-4.

One of the greatest times in his Junior career came in 2010, when DeSerres and the Memorial Cup host Wheat Kings blanked Moncton 4-0 in their second game of the tournament before a sellout crowd of over 5,200. He was named the game’s Second Star. A few days later, on May 21, DeSerres earned an overtime victory in the semifinal, sending Brandon to the final, where they lost to Windsor. The following season he won the Memorial Cup with Saint John of the QMJHL.
