Bruchet capped off 2013 by winning the Canadian championship in Vancouver on Nov. 30 on his home course at Jericho Beach.
In March, Bruchet, representing Canada, finished 65th at the 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
This is the second year in a row Bruchet has been named BC’s Senior Male Cross Country Runner of the Year. In 2012, the White Rock native finished fifth at the Canadian championships and captured the bronze medal at the NAIA national meet in Vancouver, Wash.
Bruchet was also recognized on Saturday for his international appearances, representing Canada at the NACAC Cross Country Championships in Mandeville, Jamaica, the 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships as well as the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, where he competed in track and field.
Maria Bernard was also feted for her participation at the NACAC Cross Country Championships and the 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
On the coaching front, UBC’s Marek Jedrzejek was honoured for his stint as head coach of Canada’s team at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, while Thunderbirds sprint coach Derrick Johnston represented the maple leaf at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia. UBC jumps coach Tatjana Mece was named the winner of a 2013 Excellence in Coaching Award in the Senior Coach category.
Three former UBC Thunderbirds, high jumper Mike Mason of Nanoose Bay and race walkers Inaki Gomez of Vancouver and Evan Dunfee of Richmond, were nominated for Senior Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year but lost out to shot putter Dylan Armstrong.
Mason, Gomez, Dunfee, Ben Thorne and Curtis Moss were UBC alumni who were recognized for their participation in international events for Canada.
