December 7, 2013, Red Deer (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks (22-5-2-2) picked up a 5-4 win in Red Deer Saturday against the Rebels (14-15-0-2).
The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board, as Chase De Leo scored just nine seconds into the game for the early 1-0 lead. They struck again at the 8:00 mark when Paul Bittner scored to extend the advantage to 2-0. After Red Deer’s Adam Musil put the home team on the board with a power play goal at the 11:31 mark, Brendan Leipsic answered back three minutes later with a power play goal of his own to make it a 3-1 lead going into the second period.
Portland struck again 7:17 into the second on a goal by Alex Schoenborn to push the advantage to 4-1, before the Rebels cut it back down to two on a goal by Vukie Mpofu 19 seconds later to make it 4-2. Red Deer’s Conner Bleackley brought the home team within one at the 11:40 mark, but Leipsic responded with his second of the game at the 15:04 mark to make it 5-3 heading into the third.
Red Deer again got within one on a shorthanded goal 7:08 into the third from Dominik Volek to cut the lead to 5-4. But from there Portland netminder Jarrod Schamerhorn slammed the door to give the Hawks the victory.
Leipsic finished with two goals and an assist for three points, while Bittner and Nic Petan each had two points apiece.
Schamerhorn earned the win in net with 32 saves on 36 shots. Red Deer goaltender Patrik Bartosak allowed five goals on 39 shots.
Portland was 1-3 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks close out their road trip with a 3 p.m. tilt in Calgary tomorrow against the Hitmen.
