December 11, 2013, OTTAWA (ISN) – The Calgary Torpedoes took two of three games from Team Saskatchewan this past weekend in Saskatoon as the 2014 Major League Water Polo (MLWP) men’s season got underway.
All three matches were decided by one goal. Saskatchewan took the first game 13-12 before Calgary earned 13-12 and 9-8 wins. Marshall Young of Saskatchewan was the top scorer over the three games with 11 goals while Devon Thumwood notched seven goals.
Calgary and Team Saskatchewan are in the inaugural Western Division. The Quebec Division teams are Quebec Hydres, CAMO Roadrunners (Montreal), Dollard Devils and Laval Tritons. The Ontario Division is comprised of the Hammer Water Polo Club (Hamilton), Mavericks Water Polo Club (Toronto) and the Toronto Golden Jets.
The men’s Western Division is a five-game series in Saskatoon and Calgary. Ontario and Quebec men’s teams play a four-game divisional series and one inter-divisional “crossover” weekend. The divisional winners along with the playoff host qualify for the four-team playoff weekend March 22-23, 2014 in Montreal.
CAMO is the defending league champion and defeated the Golden Jets 7-6 in last year’s final for its third title in five years.
On the women’s side, the Canadian Women’s Super 8 League (CWS8L) will act as the qualifier of a western team in the four-team playoff weekend. The Ontario and Quebec women’s teams play a four-game divisional series and one inter-divisional “crossover” weekend with each divisional champion qualifying for the MLWP playoffs. The final qualification spot will be held by the host club.
The women’s teams are Pacific Storm (Vancouver), Fraser Valley, Saskatchewan and Calgary Renegades in the Western Division; Hammer, Mavericks and Golden Jets in the Ontario Division and Dollard, CAMO and Quebec Hydres in the Quebec Division.
Dollard beat the Mavericks 5-3 in last year’s final for its second straight crown and third in five years. League action resumes January 4-5 in Ste-Foy, Que., with the men’s Quebec Division play.
