December 13, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Aaron Irving was announced Friday as one of 40 players named to the BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and will compete for Team Cherry in the annual contest.
The 17-year-old Edmonton native has seven goals and 17 assists in 31 games this season in his first year with the Oil Kings. Originally drafted ninth overall in 2011, Irving has become a mainstay on the Oil Kings blue line this year and is one of only two defencemen on the team to suit up for every game this season.
Draft eligible for the first time this season, Irving was named to the NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch list for November, marking his first time cracking the list.
Oil Kings Head Equipment Manager Rogan Dean and Head Atheltic Therapist Brian Cheeseman were both named to the training staff for Team Cherry.
The BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospect game features the top draft-eligible players in the Canadian Hockey League and will take place Wednesday, January 15 in Calgary, AB. Previous Oil Kings to take part in the event include Mark Pysyk, Griffin Reinhart, Curtis Lazar and Tristan Jarry, who was named the Player of the Game for Team Cherry at the 2013 game in Halifax.
The 2014 game will be broadcast live on Sportsnet.
