December 13, 2013, ESQUIMALT, B.C. (ISN) – Marino Somerville scored the game winner with 2:12 remaining in regulation to lift the Victoria Cougars to a 2-1 win over the Campbell River Storm on Thursday night.

Parked in front of the net, Somerville banged home a Jordan Davie pass behind goalie Jack Surgenor for his 12th goal of the season.

Extending their win streak to four games, Victoria (24-4-1-1) has now left the Storm, Westshore Wolves, Nanaimo Buccaneers, and Kerry Park Islanders all in their wake.

Josiah Friesen replied for Campbell River (17-8-2-2) who had won its last two games.

Cougars’ goalie Connor Beauchamp stopped 25 shots which included making several difficult saves down the stretch.

Surgenor turned aside 25-of-27 shots in the loss.

The Cougars drew first blood at 3:40 of the second period. On a partial breakaway, David Marshall beat Surgenor blocker side from 20 feet out. Ryan Carson, who was recently named Kirby’s Source for Sports VIJHL Player of the Week, was credited with the only assist.

Michael Fretz came close to giving Victoria a 2-0 lead shortly thereafter but his shot rang off the near post.

The Cougars were lucky two minutes later when Brayden Taekema fired a Brendan deVries centering pass over the net.

The dynamic duo came oh so close once again. This time, with just under five minutes remaining in the period, Taekema had his scoring attempt gobbled up by Beauchamp.

Both teams exchanged glorious scoring opportunities in the third period.

Using Fretz as a decoy on an odd man rush, Marshall hit nothing but iron. Then four minutes later, Beauchamp stopped Jordan Rauser on a 3-on-1 break.

There was no scoring until 13:37 when Friesen backhanded the puck past Beauchamp.

And it looked as though overtime was in the cards.

But Somerville would quash that notion. Though the goal would never have happened had it not been for the tenacious fore-checking from Liam Carradine which forced Ryan Grills to cough up the puck along the end wall.

Storm head coach Lee Stone pulled Surgenor for an extra attacker with 45 seconds remaining in regulation but the move proved futile.

Jake Stolz, a stay-at-home defenseman, came up with a huge shot block in the late stages of the game.

Special teams cost Campbell River a win; failing to take advantage on five power play opportunities.

The Cougars went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
