December 15, 2013 (ISN) – The Victoria Cougars (24-5-1-1) play host to the Westshore Wolves (11-13-3-5) this afternoon. Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 3:30 p.m.
This is the sixth meeting of the season between these South Island Division rivals. Victoria has taken four of five and has outscored the Wolves 34-7 in the process. Blake Roney leads all Cougars scorers with 12 points in the series. For Westshore, Connor Krupa and Thomas Strocel have a series-leading two goals.
After 10-0, 7-0, 5-2, and 9-2 decisions; one contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
Victoria had its four game win streak snapped with a 2-0 loss to the Saanich Braves on Friday.
For the Cougars to get back into the win column, they will need to score some goals. Averaging over five goals per game for the most part of the season, Victoria is now sitting at 4.81 goals per game.
That though is still an enviable stat.
Over their last three games, the Cougars have managed to score only four goals. On the bright side, they have only allowed three goals against.
Victoria was 10-1-0-0 in its previous 11 games before Friday’s loss.
Roney leads the Cougars in scoring with 22 goals and 18 assists for 40 points and sits tied for fifth place in league scoring. Sitting tied for seventh place is Graham Zagrodney who leads all defensemen in league scoring with five goals and 34 assists for 39 points.
Victoria goaltenders Nathan Hargrave and Connor Beauchamp, who will represent Team South at the All-Star Game at Island Savings Centre in Duncan, B.C. on January 18, 2014, sit 1-2 in goals against average.
Hargrave has a 1.83 G.A.A. while Beauchamp has a 1.97 G.A.A.
After posting wins against the Oceanside Generals and Nanaimo Buccaneers, Westshore enters this afternoon’s game against the Cougars riding a three game losing streak.
The road leading up to the Christmas break does not get any easier for the Wolves who play the Peninsula Panthers on Wednesday before facing Victoria next Saturday.
It its last game, Westshore lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Braves by a final of 5-4. Sam McMullen scored a shorthanded goal at 2:58 of extra time to give Saanich the win.
Westshore has allowed a league high eight shorthanded goals.
Brett Lervold is tied for fifth place in league scoring with 15 goals and 25 points for 40 points. With 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points, Connor Krupa sits tied for seventh place in league scoring.
Ranked 15th amongst all goaltenders with a 4.29 G.A.A. is Matt Chester.
The Wolves currently sit five points back of the second place Panthers and two points ahead of the fourth place Kerry Park Islanders.
