December 14, 2013, EDMONTON (ISN) – Morgan Bird of Calgary made her first big international splash this summer and she hasn’t missed a beat at the 2013 Speedo Can-Am Para-swimming Championships.

After two wins on Friday, Bird won gold in the women’s 50-m freestyle and 200-m individual medley in the S8 category on Saturday. Her time of 3:10.92 in the 200 IM was a personal best.

“I was happy with both races,” Bird said. “The 200 IM stands out a bit more because I haven’t been able to get a best time in a while. Coming into this meet I knew what I wanted to improve and I kept my focus on that.”

Bird competed in five events at the 2013 IPC World Championships in Montreal in August. She earned two silver medals and reached the finals in the other three.

Other national team members enjoying successful evenings for the women were Brianna Nelson of Victoria, Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, N.L., and Aurélie Rivard of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., with two wins apiece.

On the men’s side, Jean-Michel Lavallière of Quebec City also continued to shine with victories in the S7 200-m butterfly with a personal best time, and the 200-m IM. The butterfly final was in the morning and was held right before his 200 IM heat.

“To have endurance races like that back-to-back and be successful means my training is going really well,” said Lavallière, also a national team member. “I’m a little surprised with my time in the fly but it’s a stroke I’ve been working on a lot in training.”

Danial Murphy of Halifax also won twice.

Competition ends Sunday. Preliminary sessions start at 9:30 a.m. with finals set to start at 4:30 p.m. at the Kinsmen Sports Centre (95 Walterdale Hill) Live results are available at: https://swimming.ca/liveresults/2013canamedmonton/
