December 17, 2013, OCEANSIDE, California (ISN) – The Trinity Western Spartans men’s basketball team kicked off their three game southern California holiday tour Tuesday night with a 94-71 loss to No. 8 Cal State San Marcos at the CSUSM Holiday Classic Tournament at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California Tuesday evening.

The 28 to 11 turnover ratio and the 34 to 14 free throw margin proved to be the difference in the game as the Spartans moved to 8-9 on the season, while the No. 8 Cougars moved to 10-1.

“We are not used to that intense pressure for 40 minutes and having 28 turnovers may be a new record and one that we don’t feel very proud of,” commented TWU head coach Scott Allen after the game. “We are slowly learning the importance of turnover to assists ratio and emphasis in practice and games is paramount prior to start o second half of season.”

Denny McDonald with 21 points and four rebounds, Anthony Ottley with 11 rebounds and six points, Justin Bakuteka with 13 points, three assists and three rebounds and mark Perrin with 13 points led the Spartans, while De’End Parker with 21 points and five rebounds and Malcolm Lemmons with 16 points and 11 rebounds led the Cougars.

“Bright spots for us tonight were Denny’s production and Anthony’s taking on a stronger role on rebounding.”

Trinity Western took an early lead, but a 12-0 run by Cal State San Marcos saw the Cougars take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Zack Zaragoza’s three-pointer put CSUSM up 29-18 at the 10:15 mark. TWU fought back to cut its deficit to five points, 40-35, after a Kelvin Smith three-pointer with four minutes remaining , but the Cougars would head into the half time break with a 50-38 advantage.

The Spartans pulled back within six points, 57-51, just 3:30 into the second half, after a Justin Bakuteka fast break lay-up. However, the Cougars responded with a 9-1 spurt in the following two minutes to lead 66-52 with 13:59 remaining. The Spartans could not bite into the CSUSM advantage. The Cougars eventually opened up their biggest lead of the night, 26 points, on Caisan McNamara’s jumper with 3:44 remaining, 90-64.

The Spartans will finish off the CSUSM Holiday Classic Wednesday night against Vanguard University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. PST at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California. Live stats will be available on the CSUSM website.

The Spartans will conclude their southern California tour on Saturday, December 21 at Biola University.

Trinity Western continues Canada West conference play on January 10-11 in Winnipeg against the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.
