December 19, 2013, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate defenceman Keegan Kanzig who today signed a three-year entry level contract with the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Calgary Flames.
Kanzig was selected by Calgary with the club’s third round, 67th overall, pick in the 2013 NHL Draft to become the highest drafted player in Royals’ team history. This season, the 6-5, 242 lb blueliner has appeared in 30 games for Victoria and recorded four points (2g-2a) to go along with a team-high plus-17 rating and 57 penalty minutes.
“It’s a huge honour to sign with such a great organization,” Kanzig said. “It’s one step closer to my goal of playing for the Flames and it gives me even more motivation to continue to work hard, improve and help my team win.”
In his three-year WHL career, Kanzig has appeared in 163 games and has registered 13 points (2g-11a) along with 282 penalty minutes. Kanzig has also appeared in 10 games in the WHL Playoffs where he has scored one goal and posted 18 minutes in penalties. Kanzig represented Team Pacific at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Championships.
The Athabasca, AB native was selected by the Chilliwack Bruins in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft in the first round, seventh overall.
