December 29, 2013, Victoria (ISN) – Hoop junkies can get their high school basketball fix early this New Year, with the 28th SMUS Invitational Tournament set to run Thursday, January 2 to Saturday, January 4, 2014.

The Boys event features a loaded field, including BC AA#2 ranked and host SMUS. The Blue Jags, 9-3 so far this season, feature a well balanced lineup led by guards Graeme Hyde-Lay and Danny Wu, in addition to senior forward Matt Rud.

SMUS matches up first with big and powerful Cowichan, led by 6’5″ swingman Josh Charles. Next up will be Sheldon Williams of Regina before a final Pool A game against local heavyweight Claremont. The Spartans, behind provincial team PG Taylor Montgomery-Stinson, forward Alex Jordache and sharpshooting Jamal Slack, are in rich form and have just cracked the provincial AAAA Top 10 rankings.

Edmonton’s Harry Ainlay, the #2 AAAA ranked team in Alberta, looks favoured to top Pool B. The Titans play at a blistering tempo, paced by the outstanding backcourt duo Berento Mohammed and Andriy Halusko. However, Oak Bay, led by Temo Weiner, Atlas Butler and Matt Gray, are also rounding into form and keen to go one better than its recent runner up finish in the Gary Taylor Classic.

Lambrick Park, BC AA #3, showcase PG Ismail Abdulahi and welcome back Matt Neufeld from an ankle injury. The 6’9″ pivot, among BC’s top prep performers, is an imposing inside presence at both ends of the floor. Rounding out Pool B is Vancouver College. Do not be deceived by the Vancouver Independent’s lack of height, as the Fighting Irish more than compensate through swarming pressure defence and effective dribble penetration.

The top two teams from both Pool A and B will contest the tournament semifinals Friday night, with the winners then set to meet in the final at 4pm on Saturday.

On the Girls side, a five team field features round robin play involving SMUS, Lambrick Park, Wellington of Nanaimo, Notre Dame from Vancouver and Alberta’s Rundle College.

The opening day clash between Lambrick Park and Rundle could go a long way to determining the title. The Calgary based Cobras return to the Island for a third consecutive year and have been an increasingly dangerous foe with every visit.
