December 29, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team found their offense in the second game of their tournament, defeating the Western Mustangs 77-74 to earn their first victory in the CIS Thunder Selects Holiday Classic. The win puts the Vikes in a Nov. 30 tilt against the Dalhousie Tigers.
Jessica Renfrew came up big for the Vikes Sunday, posting 27 points to lead her squad in scoring for the second-straight match. She was aided on offense by teammate Sarah Semeniuk, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Shaylyn Crisp rounded out the top-3 scorers for the Vikes, putting up eight points and seven rebounds in the contest.
The Mustangs came out strong in the first quarter, leading by as many as eight points just over three minutes in. The Vikes would stop the bleeding quickly as they began to chip away at the lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Crisp at the three-minute mark put the Vikes up by two. Both teams converted on offensive opportunities in the second quarter, exchanging leads several times, with UVic holding a five-point advantage heading into halftime.
The third-quarter saw the Vikes maintain their lead despite being outscored in a period for the first time in the game. Western’s offense continued to roll in the fourth quarter, earning them a six-point lead with two and half minutes remaining. The Vikes refused to concede the match however, with UVic’s Nicole Karstein converting several key free throws to cut the Mustang lead to three late in the final frame.
Following a foul on Western’s Victoria Heine, Crisp converted two more free throws to give the Vikes a one-point lead with 39 seconds remaining. A missed three pointer at the buzzer by the Mustangs secured the 77-74 victory for UVic, who will play their third and final exhibition match against the Dalhousie Tigers, 7:00 a.m., PST.
