December 30, 2013, La Mirada, Calif. (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team opened their two-game California exhibition tour, Dec. 30 at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif., falling to the Biola Eagles (9-5) by a 69-61 margin.

Chris Mclaughlin led the Vikes on offense, posting 22 points and nine rebounds, while Terrell Evans and Dominic Ohl added 15 and eight points, respectively. Biola’s Pierre Zook led his squad with 18 points while Dakari Archer added 17. Andre Murillo rounded out the top-3, putting up 14 points.

The first half saw Biola taking a six-point lead in the first quarter before a layup by Mclaughin and back-to-back three pointers by Ted Neilson and Ohl turned the momentum in UVic’s favour.

Vike Jordan Charles extended the UVic lead in the tenth minute of the first half, draining a three pointer to push his team’s lead to three. The Vikes held an 11-point lead at fifteen minutes of the first half, but a late run by Biola would cut the lead to 33-26 heading into halftime.

UVic’s Mclaughlin asserted his physical presence early in the second half of play, going to the line on two occasions and drawing a foul that resulted in a three-point conversion by Evans. The Vikes would establish a 12-point lead five minutes into the second half, before Biola would once again battle back to within six points. A three-point conversion by Biola’s Zook cut the Vikes lead to just a single point with just under seven minutes remaining.

After the Eagles finally converted a layup to take a 53-52 lead, late fouls by the Vikes pushed the Biola lead to six-points before a long three by Terrell Evans, followed by a McLaughlin dunk cut it to two points with under a minute remaining. The Vikes failed to regain the lead in the final minutes of play, however, succumbing to a strong second half by the Eagles who walked away with a 69-61 victory.

The Vikes will have a quick turnaround as they wrap up 2013 with the second and final game of their California tour against the Concordia Eagles, Dec. 31. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
