December 30, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team capped off their December exhibition tournament on Dec. 30 with an overtime victory, defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 88-86 in the final game of the CIS Thunder Selects Holiday Classic in Halifax, N.S.
UVic’s Jessica Renfrew and Cassandra Goodis had strong outings on offense for the Vikes, putting up 25 and 23 points, respectively. Jenna Bugiardini added 16 points, while Sarah Semeniuk chipped in with 14 points in the contest. Dalhousie’s Tessa Stammberger carried her squad, posting 31 points alongside nine rebounds through four quarters. The Vikes finish with a 2-1 record in the tournament after receiving their other win in a Dec. 29 match against the Western Mustangs.
Dalhousie controlled much of the opening quarter in Monday’s tilt, holding a five-point lead midway through the quarter. Three pointers in the second half of the first quarter by Renfrew and Goodis would contribute to a two-point Vikes lead heading into the second frame of play. The Tigers would push back on offense, recapturing the lead and holding a slim lead through the entire quarter. The teams would head into halftime with the Tigers leading 35-33.
The Tigers maintained their lead through the third quarter, pushing their lead to six points at the seven-minute mark. The Vikes continued to battle and put up points to keep the game within reach. A missed three-pointer by UVic’s Jenna Krug late in the quarter was recovered by Bugiardini, who converted a layup to tie the game. Vike Ashley McGinnis would finish off an offensive zone scramble late with a layup of her own to give the Vikes a two-point lead heading into the fourth.
Neither side would concede the match as they continued to put up points in the fourth quarter. Several lead changes and a total of seven ties throughout the final ten minutes ended with the teams deadlocked 76-76 and headed to overtime. Nearly three minutes in, Bugiardini would go to the line, finishing on both free throws to give the Vikes a two-point advantage. The Vikes would hold on to the lead for the remainder of overtime, earning an 88-86 victory over the Tigers.
The Vikes will return to Canada West competition Jan. 10 against the Saskatchewan Huskies at McKinnon Gym, Victoria.
