Men drop final game of California tour to Concordia

January 1, 2014 (ISN) – The Concordia Eagles snuck in one more win in 2013 on Tuesday night, December 31, as they defeated Victoria 72-60 inside CU Arena.

Terrell Evans posted 18 points in the loss for the Vikes, while Reiner Theil and Kyle Peterson put up 11 and nine points, respectively. Stephen Grosey had a career-high 16 points and five steals, to go with six rebounds. Donnell Phifer chipped in 16 as well, his fifth time in double figures this season. DeLaun Frazier was the final Eagle in double figures with 11.

The game was close early as Concordia grabbed a 4-3 lead two minutes in. Victoria regained the lead, but CU scored seven straight with four from Phifer and a three-point play from Lucas Simpson. A layup by UVic’s Evans tied the game at 11. A layup from Kiefer Douse tied the game at 16 at the 10:59 mark and Douse followed with a three. UVic tied the game again at 21 at 7:25.

Two layups from Phifer and one from DeLaun Frazier put CU back up six, 31-25. Scoring another six straight, a three from Grosey with seven seconds left gave CU the 40-27 halftime edge.

The Vikes opened the second half with a three and by 16:17 it was down to 44-38 CU. Layups from Frazier and Nolan Abernathy pushed it back to 11, 52-41. A 9-3 run, capped by a three from CU’s Justin Davis made it 61-44 Concordia. The lead grew to 21 at 8:02 on another three from Davis as the Eagles cruised comfortably to the finish, 72-60.

The Vikes return to Canada West action, Jan. 10 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
