December 31, 2013, Everett, WA (ISN) – Tuesday night at Comcast Arena, the Victoria Royals visited the Everett Silvertips in the first of a two-game home-and-home series. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net, while the Silvertips looked to Austin Lotz.
The first stanza showcased both netminders as several key shots were turned aside at both ends of the ice. After Lotz robbed the Royals of a scoring chance, Taylor Crunk found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 14:42 mark. On the man advantage, Logan Fisher won a face-off in the offensive zone and slid the puck back to Crunk who snapped it past the blocker of Lotz. After 20 minutes of play, the Royals led 1-0.
The Silvertips responded early in the second period on a powerplay as Logan Aasman deflected a point shot past Polivka at 4:22. Victoria fired back late in the frame at 17:48 to take a 2-1 lead. From the left corner, Royals’ forward Austin Carroll fed a pass to Steven Hodges in the slot before the Yellowknife, NWT native quickly slid a backhanded effort through the legs of Lotz. The scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of Victoria after two periods.
Everett tied the game at two with a powerplay marker by Patrick Bajkov at the 6:56 mark of the third period. Carroll had a chance to give the Royals the lead on an odd-man rush midway through frame, but was denied by the glove of Lotz. With just 35 seconds left in the game, Ben Walker broke the tie for the Royals. On a powerplay, Hodges fed Axel Blomqvist at the right side of the net where he then made a pass through a maze of bodies to the Edina, MN native at the left face-off dot. Walker made no mistake as Lotz sprawled to get into position and wired his 17th goal of the season into the left corner. The Silvertips pressed to tie the game late in the frame, but Walker’s tally stood as the game-winner. Royals 3 Silvertips 2.
Victoria went 2/5= 40.0% on the powerplay, while Everett went 2/4= 50.0%. The Silvertips outshot the Royals 34-21.
