January 2, 2014, Burnaby, B.C. (ISN) – The Simon Fraser University Men’s Ice Hockey team is pleased to announce that North Vancouver’s Luke Kasteel has committed to join the team for the 2014 Spring semester.
Kasteel spent last season with the CCHL’s Carleton Place Canadians where he notched 28 points in 36 games and an additional 7 points in 12 games during the playoffs. The 6’2″ forward also spent time with the Flin Flon Bombers of the SJHL, and the Williams Lake Timberwolves of the BCHL.
“Adding some depth to the roster, especially up the middle, is very important to us as we enter the second semester,” says SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta. “His size is definitely an asset and he will fit in great with our group.”
Kasteel will face a tough test to start his season, as his first game with the Clan will be January 3rd as they host the NCAA’s Princeton University Tigers as part of the exhibition Great Northwest Showcase. It won’t get any easier with University of North Dakota visiting the night after. Kasteel will make his regular season debut on January 11th against Thompson Rivers University.
“I am excited to play with the SFU hockey team because of the quality of the program,” says Kasteel. “I have been out to a few practices with the team so far and it is clear that everyone is committed to working hard and winning a championship. I also want to get my academics going again and to do well in my classes and help out in the community as much as possible.”
Kasteel will join former UBC Thunderbird Scott Brkich as the two new faces in the SFU dressing room as the team pushes for a strong finish to the BCIHL season.
