January 3, 2014, Spokane, WA (ISN) – Friday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, the Victoria Royals squared off with the Spokane Chiefs for the fourth and final time this season. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in goal, while the Chiefs countered with Eric Williams.
Both sides had chances to open the scoring early as the two teams traded a powerplay opportunities, but neither was able to convert. Markson Bechtold got Spokane on the board when he knocked in a goal mouth scramble at the 11:32 mark. Brandon Fushimi responded for the Royals on a powerplay just 2:30 later. After Williams kicked a rebound into the slot, Fushimi found the loose puck and buried a shot to even the score. Victoria and Spokane remained tied after 20 minutes of play.
The Chiefs regained the lead just 1:39 into the middle frame on a Dominic Zwerger marker. Cole Wedman later increased Spokane’s lead to 3-1 at the 6:20 mark. Taylor Crunk cut into the Chiefs’ lead with his fifth goal of the season 10:27 into the second period. Logan Fisher sprung Crunk on a breakaway with a perfect pass before the San Jacinto, CA native made a quick move to his forehand and beat Williams blocker side. Victoria killed off a late Spokane powerplay and trailed the Chiefs 3-2 at the second intermission.
Ryan Gagnon delivered a big hit on Spokane’s Jackson Playfair to set the physical tone early in the third period, but Mitch Holmberg regained the Chiefs’ two-goal advantage at the 11:44 mark. Holmberg then added his second of the period on a powerplay to make it 5-2 for Spokane at 14:28. Jack Walker netted his second of season for the Royals with 50 seconds left in the game, but Victoria was unable to draw closer as their six-game came to an end at the buzzer. Chiefs 5 Royals 3.
Victoria went 2/4 = 50.0% on the powerplay, while Spokane went 1/6 = 16.7%. The Chiefs outshot the Royals 41-27.
