January 4, 2014, Portland, OR (ISN) – In a Saturday night contest at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Victoria Royals took on the Portland Winterhawks. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Winterhawks countered with Jarrod Schamerhorn.

Both Victoria and Portland looked to stake themselves to an early lead as they traded scoring opportunities to begin the game. The Royals notched the game’s first goal late in the first at the 17:28 mark. Defenceman Isaac Schacher threw a shot on goal from the right point that Axel Blomqvist deflected in front for the 1-0 advantage. Portland responded just over one minute later, however, on a tally from Dominic Turgeon and the teams headed to the intermission tied at one goal apiece.

Victoria regained the lead 2:22 into the second stanza on a powerplay goal from Austin Carroll. Royals’ rearguard Jordan Fransoo fed Brandon Magee to the right of the Winterhawks’ cage who slid a cross-crease pass to Carroll for the easy deflection. The goal marked Carroll’s team-leading 21st of the season. Portland pressed for the equalizer with two powerplays in the final half of the period, but failed to find an answer for the strong penalty killing of the Royals and the visitors led 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

At the 8:58 mark of the final stanza, Austin Carroll looked to have made it a 3-1 game as he drove the net, but upon review the goal was disallowed. Victoria withstood Portland’s attack and Steven Hodges gave the Royals a two-goal margin at 16:40. Hodges stole the puck from a defender at the Portland blueline and drove to the net on a breakway before he rifled a backhanded shot over the glove of Schamerhorn. Layne Viveiros struck for Portland with just 25 seconds left in regulation to make it a one-goal game, but Victoria shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the win. Royals 3 Winterhawks 2.

Victoria went 1/3= 33.3% on the powerplay, while Portland went 0/4= 0.0%. The Winterhawks outshot the Royals 39-26.

The Royals now return home to face Portland once again in a two-game home series which begins on Friday, January 10th at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. each night.
