January 9, 2014, Saskatchewan (ISN) – University of Saskatchewan track & field athletes will suit up in their first competitive meet of 2014 in the Huskie-hosted Prairie Quad on Saturday.

The Prairie Quad features the Huskies, provincial rival the University of Regina Cougars, the University of Calgary Dinos and the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas. The coaches of all teams use the dual-format meet to evaluate the progress of the athletes, allowing for a strong travelling team for other competitive events during the season.

Returning to the Huskies squad is 2012 CIS pole vault champion Lane Britnell, CIS shot put record holder Taryn Suttie, as well as Canada West medalists and returning members of the 2013 Canada West champion men’s track & field team Cossy Nachilobe (triple jump), Cole Digel (pentathlon), Nolan Machiskinic (shot put), Alex Fedyk (sprints) and Davis Guenther (distance).

“With a combination of new faces and veteran experience, both the men’s and women’s track & field teams will be competitive this season,” said head coach Joanne McTaggart. “The men will look to get the experience needed to defend their title, while the women will continue to be strong.

Saturday’s Prairie Quad begins at 10 a.m. with women’s long jump. All events will take place at the Saskatoon Field House.
