January 11, 2014, Victoria, BC (ISN) – In a Saturday night bout at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals took on the Portland Winterhawks in the back half of a two-game home stand. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net while the Winterhawks countered with Brendan Burke.
Portland opened the scoring early when Brendan Leipsic got the puck past Vollrath at the 2:46 mark. Each team received a powerplay opportunity in the first half of the period, but both goaltenders played well to keep it a one-goal game. Leipsic was awarded a penalty shot at the 14:00 mark when he was hooked on a breakaway, but Vollrath easily turned away the shot to keep Victoria within one goal, a score that stood after 20 minutes of play.
Brandon Magee nearly tied the game two minutes into the second period, but his snap shot beat Burke and rang off the left post. Victoria was awarded a five-on-three powerplay at the 6:21 mark of the frame, but could not capitalize. Royals’ forward Jack Walker also had a chance to even the score when Jack Palmer found him alone in front of the net, but the Edina, MN native was denied by the blocker of Burke and the Winterhawks kept the 1-0 lead at the second intermission.
Jordan Fransoo sent the crowd into a frenzy when his first goal of the season tied the game for the Royals on a powerplay at the 12:49 mark of the final period. Fransoo received a pass from Axel Blomqvist at the left point where he wired a wrist shot that beat a screened Burke over the glove. The Winterhawks quickly regained the lead, however, when Oliver Bjorkstrand struck at the 15:00 mark on the powerplay. The Royals pushed for another equalizer late, but could not put a second goal past Burke as they finished the game on the penalty kill. Victoria 1 Portland 2.
Victoria went 1/5= 20.0% on the powerplay, while Portland went 1/4= 25.0%. The Winterhawks outshot the Royals 35-24.
