January 14, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track team will head to Seattle’s University of Washington, January 18 to compete in their first event of the season at the UW Indoor Preview.
The Vikes men’s roster will be highlighted by Tyler Smith, a first-year track specialist who broke the Canadian 800-metre record in a time of 1:49.6 at the age of 16. Smith will make his Vikes debut in the 600-metre race alongside 2013 Canada West All-Star’s Brendon Restall and John Pratt.
“Tyler is a little nervous for this weekend, but he’s excited to get going,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner. “All our guys look extremely fit as well. They have a pretty good shot at getting their standards this weekend.”
Vikes captain Kyle Irvine will open his track season competing in the mile race as well as the 4×800-metre relay. Irvine will be joined in the relay by Smith, Restall and Pratt. Third-year Vike Patrick Psotka rounds out the men’s roster as he competes in the 3-kilometre race.
Joining the Vikes on the women’s side will be 2013 Canada West All-star and fifth-year senior Jenica Moore and first-year Andrea Robinson, who will race in the 600-metre. Vikes rookie Brittany King and fifth-year Madeline Macdonald will open their seasons in the 3-kilometre race.
The meet will allow the Vikes to see where they stand against a mixture of Div. 1, Div. 2 and NAIA teams and will provide the Vikes an opportunity to achieve CIS qualifying standard times early in the season. Competition at the UW Indoor Preview takes place, Jan. 18 at the University of Washington.
