January 16, 2014, TORONTO (ISN) – Snow and ice may be blanketing most of Canada in these dark days of winter, but that won’t stop triathlon enthusiasts from hitting the start line for a multi-sport race, thanks to Triathlon Quebec hosting the nation’s first winter triathlon race series in February.

The Coupe des Neiges Race Series combines five kilometres of snowshoeing, 12 kilometres of skating, and five kilometres of cross-country skiing. The winter triathlon series, which consists of three events plus a provincial championships, has four race categories including: junior (16-19), senior (20-39), masters (40-59) and grand masters (60+).

“Triathlon continues to be one of the fastest growing sports for elite and recreational sport enthusiasts around the world, and it is innovative race disciplines like the winter triathlon in Quebec that will allow us to introduce our sport to more people in Canada while extending our race opportunities throughout the year,” said Luc Landriault, president, Triathlon Canada. “Canada has a passion for playing sports on snow and ice, and I think this is a tremendous opportunity to keep fit year-round while adapting a summer sport into our winter climate.”

The “Coupe des Neiges” (Snow Cup) will host three races in February with the provincial championships held in March. The following are race dates and locations:

February 1, 2014 – Triathlon d’hiver – Saint-Donat

February 9, 2014 – Défi hivernal Bizz-Or Longueuil

February 15, 2014 – Challenge des glaces Saint-Denis-de-Brompton

March 8 and 9, 2014 – Québec ITU triathlon d’hiver (Provincial Championship)

Athletes will acquire points during each race. The three best results out of the four races will count to the overall rankings. In case of a tie, results at the provincial championships will be used to break the tie. Rankings are displayed by category and overall. Rankings are accumulated only for athletes in good standing with Triathlon Quebec.
