Vikes Nation officially launches at Days of Thunder

January 16, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes officially celebrated the launch of Vikes Nation, over the Jan. 9-10 weekend at the UVic Bookstore as well as at the men’s and women’s basketball games against Saskatchewan.

Vikes Nation, a campus-wide initiative aimed at bringing together like-minded people with a focus on healthy living, rewards participants who attend athletic and recreation events with various prizes and incentives.


The weekend festivities included a pre-launch party, highlighted by a keynote speech from Olympian and Vikes Nation ambassador Simon Whitfield. The UVic Bookstore-hosted party had over 150 attendees swiping their UVic ID cards with the hopes of winning a $250 gift card to the bookstore. Second-year Vikes women’s rower Cate White was the lucky recipient of the grand prize.

The official launch party followed on Friday, Jan. 10 at the men’s and women’s Canada West bassketball games. McKinnon Gym’s main concourse was filled with several activation booths, all aimed at providing fans with an active and healthy living options, the backbone of the Vikes Nation initiative.

The Vikes Nation rally song contest came to a conclusion during halftime of the men’s game, as UVic’s School of Music partnered with the Vikes to debut the top-3 song selections at half court. Fourth-year music student Josh Lovell impressed the crowd as he showcased the top-3 entries while guest judges Jamie Cassels, UVic President, Clint Hamilton, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Susan Lewis, Director of School and Music,and varsity athlete Kyle Irvine were on hand to reveal winning scores. UVic’s School of Music seasonal instructor Colleen Eccelston’s rally song was the eventual winner, and attendees of future games will hear a recorded version of Lovell’s rendition before the starting lineups of each Vikes home game.

In addition to the Rally Song Contest, the inaugural winner of the Vikes Nation Weekly Event contest was also chosen. Third-year student Jessica Kerr was the recipient of two Mount Washington lift passes courtesy of Dairyland, two tickets to the Barenaked Ladies and a $150 gift card to the Bookstore.

To further the goal of fostering a community on campus, Vikes Nation fans are encouraged to submit entries to the “I’m In.” selfie campaign. Submit a “selfie” photo in Vikes gear and hashtag #vikesnation for the opportunity to receive additional prize packs.
