Having automatically qualified for this year’s CIS Championships following his race in the men’s mile, fifth-year captain Kyle Irvine will once again compete in the 1000-metre race as well as the 4×800-metre relay. Irvine will be joined in both races by third-year Cole Peterson as well as seniors Thomas Riva and Karl Robertson.

Peterson will enter his first race of the year looking to build upon last year’s solid season where he captured a silver medal in the men’s 4×400 race en route to being named a Canada West First Team All-star.

This weekend’s event will also be the first of the year for Canada West First Team All-star Riva. Last season, the Qualicum Beach native finished his year with a Canada West gold medal in both the 1000 and 4×800-metre distances.

Senior Vike Robertson rounds out the men’s roster for the Vikes. The 2013 Canada West All-star and Academic All-Canadian finished with a gold medal in the 4×800-metre race at last year’s conference championships, while also capturing the bronze medal in the 1500-metre distance.

Track specialist Rachel Francois will head the women’s contingent of Vikes heading to the McGill meet. The 2013 CIS First Team All-Canadian captured her second CIS Gold medal in the 600-metre distance at last year’s national championships and anchored the Vikes to a 4×800-metre gold. Francois’s weekend will be highlighted by an 800-metre invitational race that will see her facing 2012 Olympian Melissa Bishop in a World Indoor Championship qualifier.

Third-year Vikes Grace Annear, Nicole Soderberg, and Shauna McInnis round out the women’s team for this weekend’s meet. Also a 2013 CIS All-Canadian, Annear captured CIS bronze in the 400-metre and gold alongside Francois in the 4×800-metre event. Teammates Nicole Soderberg and Shauna McInnis will join Annear in the 600 and 1000-metre race while McInnis will be the lone Vike to tackle the 1500-metre distance.

The 19th annual McGill Team Challenge takes place Jan. 24-25 at Tomlinson Field House.
