January 23, 2014 (ISN) – Volleyball Canada is pleased to confirm it is hosting both a Men’s and Women’s World Championship Qualification Tournament at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont., from May 14 to 19, 2014.
Held every four years, the World Championships for volleyball are second in significance only to the Olympic Games, making qualification critical for all federations. For both the Canadian men’s and women’s team to qualify together on home soil adds to the excitement for the coaches and athletes alike.
“Any chance we get to play international matches at home is a great opportunity to share our sport with Canadian fans,” said Glenn Hoag, men’s national team coach. “We are looking forward to playing in Mississauga, and winning the event to qualify for the 2014 World Championship. This event will also be a great opportunity for us to prepare for the 2014 World League, and will also give fans a taste of what’s to come at the Pan Am Games in 2015.”
The men’s qualifier in Mississauga will consist of matches in Pool Q, and includes Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica and Panama, as well as Canada as the host country.
At the same time, Canada will host the women’s qualifier for Pool S, which includes Canada, Mexico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Jamaica.
“I am glad that we can play the World Championship qualifier in Toronto. Playing at the World Championship in Italy is obviously a very important step for us and for our program. It will be great for our young athletes to play this tournament in Canada with the support of the home audience,” said Arnd Ludwig, women’s national team coach. “We also like the fact that this is a test event for volleyball for the Pan American Games in 2015.”
The events in Canada are part of the third round for the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) qualifying process, with the winner of each the men and women’s tournament advancing to their respective World Championship.
The 2014 FIVB World Championship for men will be held in Poland, August 30 to September 21, 2014, and Italy will host the women for the first time ever from September 23 to October 12 in 2014.
