January 23, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – With the 2014 CIS Championships just weeks away, the University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s swim teams will have another chance to post qualifying times for nationals when they travel to the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre to compete in the 2014 Canada West swimming championships, Jan. 24 -26.

A total of 22 Vikes swimmers will enter the pool at this weekend’s event, with the No. 10-ranked Vikes men’s squad competing for the E.W. Griffiths Trophy. The unranked Vikes women’s team will challenge for the Felstad Memorial Trophy, having last won it in 1980. At last year’s UVic-hosted championships, it was the Calgary Dinos claiming gold on the men’s side, while the UBC Thunderbirds earned a team title in the women’s event.

On the men’s side, highly touted rookie swimmer Jon McKay will participate in his first Canada West championship, looking to emulate his Canada Games performance where he placed third in the men’s 800-metre freestyle event. The men’s roster also includes Team Canada member Aimeson Sparks-King, a participant at this past summer’s FISU games.

Fourth-year Vike and two-time Olympian Stephanie Horner returns as the most experienced member of the Vikes on the women’s side. Horner will lead a roster that includes five first-year swimmers. Last year’s Vikes women’s squad also finished in fourth-place at the national championships.

Finals for Jan. 24-25 begin at 4:00 p.m., while Jan. 26 finals start at 2:00 p.m. (PST)
