Royals skate past Blazers

January 24, 2014, Kamloops (ISN) – Friday night at Interior Savings Centre, the Victoria Royals visited the Kamloops Blazers in the fifth game of the season series. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Blazers looked to Bolton Pouliot.

Josh Connolly opened the scoring on the powerplay for the Blazers at the 6:19 mark, but Austin Carroll quickly tied the game. Carroll found a puck in the slot, spun and fired a snap shot over the shoulder of Pouliot at 7:56. The Royals made it a 2-1 game 11:20 into the frame when Brandon Magee forced the puck in front of the net before Jack Walker buried his third goal of the season. Steven Hodges extended the Royals’ lead at the 14:12 mark. Hodges cut through the slot and fired a laser from the left circle just under the crossbar. Chase Souto got one back for Kamloops at 15:17, but Logan Fisher snuck a shot through Pouliot with under three seconds remaining in the period to send the Royals to the dressing room with a 4-2 lead.

Kamloops goaltender Cole Kehler relieved Bolton Pouliot to start the second period. Victoria solved Kehler 4:28 into the period when Magee finished off a cross-ice pass from Axel Blomquist with a quick one-timer to the short side. Tyler Soy added to Victoria’s lead on the powerplay at the 10:06 mark. The Cloverdale, BC native fired home his 10th of the season past the right pad of Kehler after he retrieved a loose puck in the slot. Victoria made it a 7-2 game when Soy fed Walker who fired home his second goal of the game with 4:49 left in the period. The Royals kept the five-goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Victoria tested Kehler throughout the third frame as they outshot Kamloops 14-3. The rookie goaltender turned aside each chance, but the Royals had all the goals they needed on the night and kept the Blazers on their heels until the final buzzer to cruise to the win. Victoria 7 Kamloops 2.

Victoria went 1/5=20.0% on the powerplay, while Kamloops went 1/3=33.3%. The Royals outshot the Blazers 42-22.

The Royals will head to Vancouver to take on the Giants tomorrow night at the Pacific Coliseum in another B.C. Division showdown. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. Victoria’s next home game will take place on Friday, January 31st when the Royals host the same Vancouver Giants at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
