UBC picked up 25 of the 42 medals available Saturday, including victories in both relays and 10 of 14 gold medals. The Thunderbirds grabbed two more podium sweeps Saturday to bring their meet total to three, finishing one-two-three in both the men’s 50-metre freestyle and the women’s 200-metre backstroke.

With two days in the books, the UBC women hold a lead of more than 300 points over the host University of Calgary Dinos with 688 against Calgary’s 367. Alberta moved in front of Lethbridge for third place midway through the evening, with the Pandas just under 100 points behind the Dinos at 270.5 while the Pronghorns sit with 208.5. Victoria, Manitoba, and Regina trail the leading foursome with 139.5, 115, and 63.5 points, respectively.

The men’s race is tighter, though the Thunderbirds still sit comfortably in front with 598 points against 426 for the second-place Dinos. Again, Alberta sits third with 264 points, followed by Victoria (240), Lethbridge (225), Manitoba (126), and Regina (96).

A pair of conference records fell Saturday night, bringing the meet total to four. The first went to UBC’s Coleman Allen, who picked up his second new Canada West record in as many days in the 100-metre butterfly, lowering his own mark of 52.39 set a year ago to 52.08. Two events later, Russell Wood of the Dinos lowered one of his own records, eclipsing his previous mark of 1:56.40 with a 1:56.08 swim in the 200-metre backstroke. Both Wood and Allen will have the chance to complete the stroke triple Sunday afternoon when Allen swims in the 200-metre fly while Wood competes in the 100-metre backstroke.

In addition to Calgary’s Wood, the only other non-Thunderbirds to step atop the podium were Alberta’s Kendra Chernoff, who picked up her second gold medal of the meet in the 100-metre butterfly after winning the 50-metre event Friday night; her teammate Nick Kostiuk, who captured the men’s 100-metre breaststroke title; and Victoria’s Keegan Zanatta, who led the way in the men’s 200-metre freestyle event.

The 2014 Canada West swimming championships wrap up Sunday afternoon with, with finals set to get underway at 3 p.m. MT at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre.
