January 28, 2014, Penticton (ISN) – The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club is pleased to announce fundraising efforts from the School Spirit Challenge night.
Over $6,100 was raised for the Penticton Soupateria and the South Okanagan Boys and Girls Club at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) on Saturday, January 18th. In front of the second largest crowd of the season, 3,375 fans turned out to watch the Vees drop a close 3-2 overtime decision to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
CIBC Wood Gundy generously donated $3,375 to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club; one dollar for every person in attendance. The Vees donated $1,532 from every adult and senior ticket sold and the BC Hockey Hall of Fame donated $1,200 from 50/50 proceeds to the Penticton Soupateria.
Keray Levant, President of the Penticton Soupateria, says the money raised will go a long way in helping those in need, “The money raised by the Vees will help provide 1500 hot meals for our clients, which is 15 days’ worth. We were overwhelmed by the number raised through the team; we didn’t expect such a high figure.”
Local schools from School District 67 participated in the School Spirit Challenge during the game. Participating schools were challenged in two categories, attendance and school spirit which could be expressed through cheering, signage and the representation of school colours. Underwriters Insurance donated $1000 as incentive, to be donated to the winning schools’ Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The winning schools included:
- $500 for highest attendance: Uplands Elementary School
- $500 for school spirit: Parkway Elementary School
The Penticton Vees next home game in this Friday, January 31st, when they host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at the SOEC; puck drop is 7pm. Tickets are available at the Valley First Box Office (at the SOEC).
