January 29, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team kicks off the second leg of their 2013-14 varsity season as they hit the links at the Cougar Invitational, hosted at the Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista, Calif., February 3-4. It will be the Vikes first tournament since finishing fourth at the San Marcos Fall Classic in October.

Interim head coach Justin Clews has used the previous three weekends to select his players for this weekend’s tournament, going off a mixture of result-based finishes and gut feeling to select his top-5 golfers.

“The top-3 players from the past few weekends of playing automatically qualified to play in this tournament,” said Clews. “The other two were coaches picks, based on scoring, but also consistency. It gives me a bit more leeway for picking a player and I’ll be doing it all spring.”

Selected to play in this tournament were Vikes Jesse Teron, Carson Kallis, Sean Hay, Alex Cartwright and Connor Gann. Teron and Hay will be the only two returning players from last year’s Cougar Invitational tournament, where Teron led the Vikes with a plus-10, 18th place finish.

“Our goal this year is to qualify for nationals in Daytona,” said Clews. “After this tournament, or the next one, we’ll hope to have established our top-5 players for the year. At the moment, all nine of them are capable of winning.”

Competition at the Cougar Invitational takes place Feb. 3-4 at Shawdowridge Golf Course in Vista, Calif.
