Annear, Zanatta, men’s basketball honoured for January

January 30, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council has announced their January 2014 winners for Original Joe’s athletes and team of the month. All winners will be presented a gift certificate to the Victoria-based Original Joe’s Restaurant and Bar.

Female Athlete of the Month – Grace Annear, Women’s cross-country/track.

Third-year Vikes women’s track member Grace Annear has been awarded the Original Joe’s Female Athlete of the Month for January. Annear kicked off her track season by not only setting a personal best but by setting a new meet record in the women’s 600-metre race at the 19th annual McGill Team Challenge on Jan. 26. Annear finished in first place with her record-breaking time of 1:30.73 and was followed by teammates Rachel Francois and Nicole Soderberg to sweep the podium. Watch for Annear as the Vikes head to Washington for the UW Invitational and Husky Classic before the Canada West championships on Feb. 21-22.

Male Athlete of the Month – Keegan Zanatta, Men’s swimming

Second-year Keegan Zanatta has been awarded the Original Joe’s men’s athlete of the month following his outstanding performances at the 2014 Canada West swimming championship. Zanatta finished first in the men’s 200-m freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.62. The next day, he added another medal to the Vikes’ tally with a bronze medal in the men’s 200-m butterfly and helped Vikes finish fourth in 800-m freestyle relay. He qualified for the CIS championships on Feb.20-22 in both of his medal winning events and in the 800-m relay. To top it off, the Victoria native was also given a first team Canada West all-star nod.

Team of the Month – Men’s basketball

The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team has been named the Original Joe’s team of the month for January. The No. 3- ranked Vikes kicked off the second half of the season by downing Saskatchewan but fell to Alberta the next night in their second loss of the season. Bouncing back, the Vikes swept UNBC and Mount Royal in two straight weekends of back-to-back wins. Led by fifth year Terrell Evans who has been the leading scorer in every game in January, the Vikes look to maintain the Pacific Division crown and aim for the program’s ninth CIS title.
